Change Display Languages and Translation
How to Change Your Language Settings
Open the ELSA Speak app.
Go to Progress > Settings (⚙️) > Language.
Tap Display Language or Mother Tongue to select your preferred option.
Understanding Your Options:
Setting | What It Controls | How It Works |
Display Language | App interface (menus, buttons) and lesson translations. | Sets both your app interface and your primary translation language. |
Mother Tongue | Secondary translation language & bilingual mode. | Used for lesson translations only if Display Language is set to English. |
The Display Language is the primary setting that determines the language used for the app's interface and translation.
Supported Display Languages (14): Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese.
Supported Mother Tongue Languages (12): Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil & Portugal), Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese.
How Translations Work
Primary Translation Source: Lesson translations automatically display in your chosen Display Language.
Fallback Behavior: If Display Language is set to English, translations will switch to your chosen Mother Tongue.
Disabling Translations: If both Display Language and Mother Tongue are set to English, translations are turned off across the app.
Translation Display by Level
Levels A1 & A2: Translations appear automatically below lesson text.
Level B1 & Above: Translations are hidden by default to support immersion. Tap the Translation icon during a lesson to reveal them.
