Deleting a Class

Updated August 4, 2026

In ELSA School, maintaining an organized dashboard is key to effective management. If a class is no longer needed, Admin users can remove it from the Classes tab. To ensure no data is lost accidentally, a class can only be deleted once it is empty of learners.

Prerequisites for Deletion

An Admin user can only delete a class when there are no active or inactive learners assigned to it. Depending on what you want to do with your learners, choose one of the two workflows below:

Scenario A: Moving learners to a new class

If the learners are still active in your school, you must transfer them to a different class before deleting the current one.

Scenario B: Removing learners from the organization

If the learners are no longer needed in your organization:

  1. Navigate to the Students tab.

  2. Inactivate the learners.

  3. Remove them from the organization.

  4. Once the class count reaches zero, proceed with deletion.

How to Delete a Class

  1. Navigate to Classes: Click on the Classes tab in the left-hand sidebar menu.

  2. Locate the Class: Find the class you wish to remove from the Active list.

  3. Open the Menu: Click the three-dot (⋮) icon on the far right of the class row.

  4. Select Delete: Choose Delete Class from the dropdown menu.

  5. Review the Warning: A warning drawer will appear.

    • Note: If learners are still assigned, the system will block deletion and display a warning.

  6. Confirm Removal: Click the blue Remove button. Any assigned Teachers will be automatically dissociated from the class upon deletion.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why is the "Delete" option greyed out or showing a warning? A: This happens if the class is not empty. Even if students are "Inactive," they are still technically assigned to the class. Ensure the learner count is 0 before attempting to delete.

Q: I have "Mixed" learners (some staying, some leaving). What do I do? A: You must perform two actions:

  1. Select the active learners and use the Move to Class feature to transfer them.

  2. Select the remaining learners, Inactivate them, and then Remove them from the organization.

Q: My student count says "0," but I still can't delete the class. Why? A: Check for Pending Invitations. If you invited students via email and they haven't joined yet, they are still linked to that class. Go to Students > Pending, and cancel any invitations associated with that class.

Q: Do I need to manually remove the Teacher first? A: No. The system automatically dissociates any assigned Teachers once the class is deleted. They will remain in your organization but will no longer be linked to that specific class.

Q: Can I recover a class after it has been deleted? A: No. Deletion is permanent. If you only want to hide a class temporarily, we recommend renaming it or moving learners out rather than deleting it.
